On the 10th of June 1886, Mount Tarawera erupted. The landscape has been (re)shaped by that event, a moment that took the lives of many and had significant repercussions for the people who lived here. I pay my respects to Tuhorangi, the local tribe who inhabited this place at that time, and who have been most affected by this force of nature.
